Words are being hyphenated willy-nilly

I just noticed in the briefs that words are being hyphenated willy-nilly. Words like ‘and’ are separated for some reason, ‘an’ at the end of one line and the ‘d’ at the beginning of the second line. Why would anyone hyphenate the word ‘and’? If you can call it hyphenated, there isn’t a separator anywhere. The word ‘there’ is separated, ‘th’ at the end of one line and ‘ere’ at the beginning of the second line.

Using Google Chrome, but that shouldn’t make a difference, basic HTML is the same for all browsers.
